Fran Schaffer has published two cookbooks with us, Shortcuts to Gourmet Cooking & Family Favorites in 2008 that went into multiple reprintings and Shortcuts to Gourmet Cooking Encore in 2015. Fran’s cookbooks are not just cookbooks—they are also a combination of family history and reference material—so there are a lot of moving parts to take into account with the page design and typesetting. With the new cookbook, we had the use of full color, so we went with a more modern design aesthetic and typography that we felt was also easier to read, especially for Fran’s “step method” recipes. Both books were produced as 400-page 8.5 × 11 gloss-laminated hardcovers with 80# gloss text on offset press.
